Budapest’s ruin bars and Arsenal — a combination that works better than you’d expect.
Budapest, Hungary
The expat match HQ on Liszt Ferenc tér. Run by the same Dubliner for 20-odd years, screens over two floors and the Premier League and Champions League on with the sound up. Grab the upstairs room if downstairs is rammed, which it will be for the final. Beef and Guinness pie if you're staying the distance.
“Upstairs has better sound and fills up slower. Book ahead for the final.”

Big Irish corner pub bang in the middle of town, Sky Sports on and open late for the late kickoffs. Exactly the sort of place our lot pile into on a European night. Pilvax köz is a narrow alley off Városház utca, so look for the red front. Book ahead for the final, it'll go.
“Tucked down an alley off Városház utca. Open late for European nights.”
The one the official Arsenal away guide actually names. Home-from-home by Arany János utca metro, football on every day and a fry that sorts you out before a lunchtime kickoff. Opens at 9 on weekends. Steady base near the Basilica and the regulars keep it ticking whoever's on the box.
“Opens 9am weekends. By Arany János utca metro near the Basilica.”
Cellar full of screens in the party district, going since the 90s. Forty-odd TVs and they'll put any game on, Arsenal included, sound on. Gets packed for the big nights so get in early and claim an alcove. One warning: the host can turn sharp if you start shuffling tables about.
“Steep stairs down to the cellar, mind your head. Grab an alcove early.”
Scottish pub right on the 4/6 tram, reckoned by plenty to be the best footy room in town. Premier League and Champions League on the screens, the biggest whisky shelf in Budapest, and an expat crowd that turns up week after week. Book a table if you want one for the final. Fish and chips does the job.
“Right on the 4/6 tram line. Book a table for any big night.”
Irish-run boozer a minute off Váci utca. Multiple screens, Premier League and rugby, and what they swear is the best Guinness in Hungary. Opens 10am at weekends so the early game is covered, with live music Friday and Saturday if you're staying out. Good shout for the warm-up matches before the final.
“Opens 10am weekends, so the early kickoff is sorted.”
US-style sports barn on the Grand Boulevard, open till 5am. Nineteen TVs with the sound up and private boxes if there's a group of you. Not a proper Gooner local, but it's where you spill in after the final whistle when everywhere else has called last orders. Tram 6 stops right outside.
“Open till 5am and tram 6 stops outside. The after-match spot.”
